Gardening with children is rewarding for adults and children alike. It can teach important science principles such as life cycles, botany, wildlife habitats, food webs and ecosystems. It is also full of character-building life lessons like a sense of place and responsibility, sustainability and self-sufficiency.

Garden Friends: What is Companion Planting?
Companion planting is the concept of growing plants that compliment each other or are helpful to one another together. For example, planting something that grows tall, like peas on a trellis, where they can shade a friend that needs cooler conditions like lettuce from the mid-day sun.
Plants can be friends because one repels or traps insect pests that are damaging to another. Planting basil around tomato plants can deter tomato pests. Planting flowers like nasturtium act as attractive insect traps.
Plant friends can be those that do not compete for the same nutrients in the soil. Radishes that grow quickly and grow to shallow depths can be grown with carrots that grow deeper in the soil.
The Three Sisters
An ancient method of companion planting comes from the Native Americans. Originating in North America around 3,000 years ago, corn, beans and squash were some of the first garden friends. Each plant has features that are beneficial to the others.
Corn provides support as it grows tall and strong like a trellis. Beans add nitrogen to the soil and can climb the corn stalks. Squash is planted at the base to protect the beans and corn. The large squash leaves help provide shade and hold moisture in the ground. The shading of the squash can help prevent weed growth. Prickly squash stems can deter pests.
The Three Sisters garden is magical as it is like its own self-sustaining ecosystem. You can tell the native story of the Three Sisters to your students or children to inspire the planting of these three crops together. Scroll through this post to read the story and learn how to plant your three sisters garden.
Here are some plant pairings that make good garden friends. Some of these are based on science, some based on folklore, but all make beautiful and tasty gardens!
Cucumbers and Nasturtium- Grow cucumbers up a trellis with nasturtium down below to repel and trap pests. Nasturtium flowers are pretty and edible. They taste a bit like a radish.
Potatoes and Garlic- Garlic helps to keep away pests!
There is more to gardening than just the plants and seeds! Kids love to decorate garden markers and using them helps them to learn their plants. Kids can design their own with these blank bamboo garden markers. These 3-D printed garden markers are so colorful and these bright vegetable shaped markers would be great for a kid's themed garden.

Many people tend to think about recycling and conservation a little bit more when Earth Day rolls around. Unfortunately, a lot of the waste we create isn't easily recycled. What if we could prevent some of that waste from entering the waste stream at all? It is possible, and you can even raise some money for your school or favorite charity in the process!

TerraCycle is a company that has been helping to limit the trash headed into the waste stream since 2001. They partner with other companies to provide waste collection programs, and reward you, the trash collectors. That means that you could collect things like baby food pouches, snack bags, energy bar wrappers, toothpaste tubes, and a whole lot more of those items that you can't otherwise recycle, print out a shipping label and send them to TerraCycle for free. TerraCycle and the companies sponsoring the programs you participate in then reward your school or favorite charity by paying you to collect these items.
These "un-recyclables" are then upcycled, reused, or recycled into other products. Pretty cool, huh? This video sums up the process:
As you can imagine, these programs are really popular, so if you want to participate, you should hop on over the TerraCycle website and create an account. Then join the programs you are interested in and get on the wait list for any that aren't currently accepting new collection sites. Two that I recently joined that are (as of this blog post) accepting waste are GoGo squeeZ, which accepts all squeezable plastic snack pouches and caps, and Colgate, which accepts toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and caps, floss containers and the packaging from these oral care products.
Alternatively, some programs will send you a collection envelope to fill up. Two of these that I like are for Late July snack packaging and Buddy Fruits squeezable fruit and veggie pouches. For help with any of the recycling programs or for more information check out the resources here.
If you want to try recycling these items by upcycling them into new products yourself, TerraCycle has a whole bunch of DIY project ideas. I'm sure by perusing their site, you'll find something you want to make, or be inspired to create your own design. Check them out here. Then grab some "un-recyclables" and get designing and engineering yourself!

What is citizen science? Citizen science is the collaboration between the general public and scientists in the collection or analysis of data. Science is for everyone and citizen science projects are wonderful because they allow anyone to be part of the process. There is so much to explore in the world, that by crowdsourcing we can collect so much more information than would otherwise be possible.

Citizen Science Day (or days) is a celebration of citizen science through a series of events. This year, 2017, Citizen Science Day events will happen from April 14th-20th. You can look to see if there is an event near you by visiting this site. To learn more, watch the video series below from Citizen Science Day 2016.
You may have read about various citizen science projects here on Share it! Science already. I've been fortunate enough to partner with one of my favorite citizen science projects, Project BudBurst for the past 3 years to offer a giveaway to inspire you to try citizen science, and get kids involved in these great projects too.
Sense of Place
Not only does citizen science offer an opportunity at authentic science for kids, families, school groups, etc. but also can help kids develop a sense of place. When they begin to study their surroundings carefully they develop an intimate knowledge and appreciation of the natural world.
Project BudBurst is one of those projects that gets kids looking more deeply at the world around them. Formerly part of NEON (National Ecological Observatory Network), and recently moved to the Chicago Botanic Garden, Project BudBurst collects phenology data. Phenology is the study of seasonal phenomena, particularly in relation to climate, plants and animal behavior. Spring is a very busy time for the project, as citizen science volunteers are submitting data on when leaf and flower buds are opening.
Through the WildCam Gorongosa project, you can travel to Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, Africa and help identify wildlife from photos taken by trail cams throughout the park. These are excellent projects to set up in your classroom and have students participate in a little at a time. They help hone observation skills and allow students a chance to contribute to actual field science.

home.

Grow An Alphabet Themed Garden
For those of you with lots of space, you might be ambitious enough to try a garden with every letter of the alphabet. If you are starting seeds in the classroom, you could have each student take on a different letter. Or you could pick and choose from a few letters of the alphabet.
Here are some fruit/vegetable and flower ideas to get you started (please note: depending on where you live these may or may not be good choices for your garden, do your homework!):
Spell out a name with garden plants. If I did mine I might plant Spinach, Artichokes, Radishes, Arugula, and Honeydew to spell out SARAH. You could certainly get creative and use the common names or specific variety names to spell out just about anything you wanted. Make some cute garden markers to go along with your name garden.

An Interview with Eduporium CEO, Rick Fredkin
Is there a particular event, or experience in your life that inspired you to start Eduporium?
Having access to computers and technology was what gave me a career, so I truly believe giving young people access to resources where they can gain experience is fantastic.
Eduporium is a great resource for schools and those interested in educational technology. What is the most important or fulfilling element of running this business?
What’s important is that we get to provide innovative technology to teachers and students. We get to help students and the people who educate them. It’s a win/win/win: we are able to be in business and do good at the same time.
What do you think is the biggest stumbling block for introducing technology and STEM into schools? How does Eduporium work to alleviate some of these challenges?
I would say there are two main challenges. First is awareness, and second is the buy-in from educators. Students want to use technology, so for them this is all pretty easy. But the people who educate them have to know what exists out on the marketplace, what can be used in their classrooms, and they have to have the buy-in: they have to be shown that it’s something that’s attainable for them, and something they can use to teach what they’ve been teaching already.
We have many readers who are teachers, homeschoolers and informal educators. In fact, I was homeschooled for several years myself. I understand that you have an interesting educational background that includes Montessori, homeschooling and what I think most people would call “unschooling,” or practical life experience, these days. How did these experiences impact your interest in ed-tech?
I do have an interesting educational background. I attended Montessori schools for preschool up to kindergarten, and then attended a number of schools, both public and private, up to 8th grade. In which case, maybe I did homeschooling or “unschooling.” At the beginning of 9th grade, at the age of 12 or 13, I started professionally as a computer programmer at a full-time job, and continued working in that capacity in the computer industry ever since. That’s about 20-something years now. These experiences impacted my interest in edtech because it was my ability and access to technology in my younger years which led me to have my first summer job in the industry, and from there I learned. I want all other young people to have the same opportunities.
I think that Eduporium’s “Tech Lending Library” is a brilliant idea. What inspired this? How have schools and teachers responded to this service?
You mean “who,” and that would be one of my partners, Dr. Irina Tuuli. She is constantly talking to educators and thinking about what is best for them. Of course, a lot of the technology we’re working with is brand new, so the Tech Lending library is crucial: we need teachers, educators, and schools to understand how this new tech can be brought into the education market. So, let’s lend it to them! Doing that will make it that much easier for them to get their heads around bringing it into their schools.
There are a lot of great project ideas and instructions on Eduporium. Do you consider yourself a maker? If so, what is your favorite project?
I do consider myself a maker, yes. We don’t just have these products in the office: I have them all over my house. I use them with my kids. I make things, I break things, sometimes things don’t work, sometimes they do. My wife can sometimes get upset with me because various things around the house are in sort of “maker status,” like how we watch our TV, or the phones in our house. If I break them, they don’t work unless I fix them, which can sometimes take a while. So, yes, I’m a maker. I love to make things, I love to learn about new things, and all of the products that we sell we use – as adults!
I wouldn’t say I have a singular favorite project, per se. My type of favorite project is the kind that really shows the capability of all this technology. Say you have something like a Raspberry Pi: there are a multitude of interesting projects that you can do with it. But when you pair it with other technology, the number of things you can do with it multiplies exponentially. There’s an endless amount of possibilities.
If you had to make a prediction, what is going to be the biggest game-changer in educational technology in 2017? Is it a particular product, or method of teaching, etc.?
I’ve always been a fan of Project-Based Learning, so I think it’s great that it’s really coming to the fore and that people are paying attention to it and bringing it into schools. I mean, STEM education is great, but here at Eduporium we believe that it needs to be more than that. It’s not just technology for the purpose of teaching technology: it’s using the technology as a teaching tool and learning the same things that were going to be taught anyway, but to also have more relevant and engaging types of lessons that are more attuned to our modern world.

I'm excited to be reviewing Eduporium, an online platform that helps connect kids, schools, homeschool and makerspaces to educational technology. The Eduporium vision resonates with me in that they strive to provide experiences for children that will help them build skills, hone their imagination and creativity, and allow them to become real world problem-solvers. Another fabulous goal of Eduporium is to make ed tech accessible to schools and other organizations through education, program support, profit-sharing programs and educational discounts.

Eduporium offers a bright and engaging web page for students, parents, teachers and school administrators. Exploring their offerings you'll find cool tech, projects, a map of skills, activities and resources. For teachers and school administrators there is the Tech Lending Library, workshops, teacher collaboration sites, options for making ed tech affordable, and more.
The "cool tech" section is a great resource for learning more about a specific type of technology, i.e. Arduino or circuit stickers, and gives you an
introduction about the tech, how to get started with it, the ways it can
be used in education and some project ideas. In some cases, there are links to state education standards that might be met by using the
technology or completing a project.
I was impressed with the project and activity sections. In "Projects" you'll find tons of fun project ideas that include a full supply list and helpful thoughts on how to put the project
to use in a classroom. Projects include things
like a DIY digital camera and DIY portable boombox. The "Activity" section has plenty of activity ideas that use technology available on
Eduporium. These also include a full parts list so it is easy to get
started and classroom resources.
I think some of the most useful sections as far as developing our student's real-world skills are the "Map of Skills" and "Resources" sections of the site. Both are works in progress, but there is a lot of potential and I look forward to see where each will go. "Map of Skills" features interviews with real-world professionals highlighting the skills needed for that career, how technology plays a role and other useful
life-shaping information. "Resource"s includes "Wise Up Wednesday"
workshops meant to teach about different technology that Eduporium has
to offer schools and makerspaces.
The offerings for teachers and schools are unique. I'm excited to share these resources with colleagues in the field because I think they truly will help bring technology to their classrooms or makerspaces.
The "Tech Lending Library" is a cool program
where teachers can borrow items for a small rental fee, that can then be
used towards purchase if they choose to do so. This is a fabulous idea,
since you never really know if something will work in your particular
teaching setting until you've tried it out. Since obtaining an entire
classroom set of ed tech products can be very pricey, this takes out the
guesswork and allows schools to pilot a product and see if it makes
sense for them to purchase.
By far one of the most important services Eduporium provides is tech affordability. One of
Eduporium's goals is to make technology accessible for all students.
There are several ways they are working to make this possible: profit-sharing, academic discounts, grants and young inventor discounts.
Schools
can become a part of the profit sharing program. This allows schools to
collect a portion of the profits generated from purchases made on
Eduporium by their community members (families, faculty, etc).
Academic discounts are available for those who qualify. A brief questionnaire
makes it easy to find out whether or not you can take advantage of
educational pricing, sometimes up to 85% off in order to make technology
accessible to all classrooms. These discounts were put into place by
some of the major technology companies, but few people know about them,
so the funds go unused. This is your chance to take advantage of these
programs for your classroom!
Eduporium awards an educational technology grant of $250 each month to fund proposed projects. You can submit a proposal for a project on the website.
Discounts
are also available for "young inventors". Kids can write to Eduporium
about how they want to change the world, and they just might get the
help they need to do so.
To help implement technology into schools, Eduporium teaches workshops and provides opportunities for teacher collaboration.
Currently,
Eduporium is offering three different types of workshop opportunities.
The workshops serve groups of students and their teachers, just
teachers, or workshops that highlight how to use different products.
These give people a chance to see this technology in practice, similar
to the benefits of the Tech Lending Library it allows exploration before
committing to purchasing a product before knowing how to incorporate it
into learning or whether it will work in a particular setting.
Any
school or school district can sign up for their own space on
Eduporium's site. These teacher collaboration sites empower teachers within a school or district to
work together and share ideas by providing a space to share lesson
plans, or ask questions. There is the potential for teachers to post
"wish-lists" for upcoming materials that will be required and share them
with their students or the communities' users. Schools and districts
can set up their own stores where products they are choosing to use can
be purchased.
On Eduporium's forums teachers and the community can post questions, collaborate ideas and more. As an educator, I find this to be an invaluable resource. None of us are teaching in a bubble, so it is awesome to have a space for collaboration!
To take some of the guesswork out of building a school STEAM program or get kids started making, Eduporium offers kits and bundles. Different
types of tech are bundled together to create all the supplies needed to
explore a certain area, such as circuits, or robotics. The bundles
teach skills that build upon each other and are chosen for age and skill
appropriateness.

What exactly is citizen science?
Citizen science is when scientists collaborate with the general
public in collecting data and making observations. There are a myriad
of projects available from field work to online activities that
broaden the abilities of professional scientists by using the
collective power of the public. Citizen science is an excellent way
to connect kids to authentic science in the classroom, through
after-school programs, or camps.

Citizen science has been a popular
topic here on Share it! Science News. We've featured many different
projects that are fun and easy to participate in. We especially like
Project BudBurst because it is a project anyone
can do, and there are many resources available for students and teachers. You
can also get younger kids started with their BudBurst Buddies
program. Project BudBurst collects plant
phenology data. While this might sound complicated, it's not!
Phenology is the study of cycles and seasonal phenomena. When you
participate in Project BudBurst you observe plants in your area for
seasonal changes, such as budding, bud burst and flowering, then
report your observations online.
We've been fortunate to team up with

Growing plants with children has so
many benefits- learning plant life cycles, learning where food comes
from, and of course learning some responsibility along the way!
Growing a kid's theme garden can really connect children with their
garden patch.
Last year, we explored growing Rainbow and Pollinator gardens. This year we will investigate themed vegetable gardens: a Taco garden
and a Pizza garden!

Growing a Taco Garden
You can get started growing a taco
garden in pots, a small garden bed or in a portion of a larger
garden.
Although growing corn and grinding it
for your own tortillas might seem a little ambitious, this can
definitely lead to an interesting discussion about where the other ingredients for a taco come from!
You might also want to check out the picture book, So You Want to Grow a Taco? by Bridget Heos to explore the idea further.
If you are interested in growing your
taco garden in pots, you might try some of the container tomatoe varieties
from Renee's Garden such as: Heirloom Stupice or Super Bush.
Herbs are easy to grow on a patio or
even indoors. For a taco garden you might try some cilantro, like
this heirloom variety.
What is a pizza made of? What can you
grow in your pizza garden? Tomatoes and oregano for sauce, basil,
peppers and onions for toppings. If you have a large garden you
probably have other items that would taste yummy on there, like

Just as you can grow many of your "taco
plants" in the garden, or in pots, the same goes for your pizza
toppings. Basil and oregano grow wonderfully in pots or out under and
among the tomatoes in the garden. These herbs have the added benefit
of keeping some tomato pests away!
