T. Rex Tracks: A Math and Science Activity with Turtle Trails Publishing

Your kids are going to love getting outside and trying this dinosaur-themed STEM activity!

Tyrannosaurus Rex is one of the most popular dinosaurs of all time for a lot of reasons, but how much do you actually know about this dinosaur? I have an awesome science + math activity you about T. Rexes for you and your kiddos today!

T. Rex Dinosaur Math and Science Activity


Hi! My name is Carla Mae Jansen, and I recently finished writing A Dinosaur Made Me Sneeze, a picture book about the rock cycle (more on that below!). Anyway, since I’ve been working on this book we have been doing a ton of dinosaur activities lately--partly because the book is on everybody’s minds and partly because we all love dinosaurs! Seriously, I think there’s a part of me that will be seven forever.

Anyway, today I’m excited to share this T. Rex Tracks activity with you! It’s a low-prep, easy to do dinosaur activity that has your kids use science reasoning and math skills to create T. Rex “tracks!” 

Simple Supplies:


1- Track Markers (masking tape OR paper OR sidewalk chalk if you’re outside!)
2- Measuring tape or rulers

Easy How To:


1- To begin, ask your kids to guess how tall their legs are. Most kid legs will be 2-3 feet high. Tell them that most T. Rex legs were about 11 feet high! Measure 11 feet high along a wall, and see where the T. Rex leg would be! The rim of our basketball hoop was right at 11 feet...and yes, my 7 year old can climb straight up to it!

2- When we did this, I told the kids that since T. Rex legs were so tall, their steps were HUGE! But before we looked at T. Rex steps, let’s see what kid steps look like. Let the kids work in teams to mark a set of kid “tracks” showing at least 10 steps.  Is this different if they run?

3- Ask your kids how many kid steps they think would fit inside of one T. Rex step (or stride). If you have paper, write down their guesses. Since we were outside, we just talked about it.

4- Ask the kids how they can figure out how many kid steps fit inside on T. Rex step. It might help them to know that T. Rex steps when walking were about 5 feet long and when running were about 12 feet long!  According to our measurements, my 4-year would have to 6 steps to keep up with a T. Rex, my 7-year old would have to run 4 steps for every 1 T. Rex step, and my 10 year old would have to run 3 mighty leaps to keep up.

T. Rex Fun Fact: Some researchers believe that T. Rexes could have run up to 20 miles per hour, but would not have run faster than that because if they were to fall going any faster the crash would have killed them!

This is my new dinosaur-themed, science-based picture book!  It’s a delightful rhyming story that introduces rock cycle science (complete with vocabulary like “sedimentary,” “igneous,” “metamorphic,” and more!) with fantastic characters and a hilarious story! Dinosaur Dreams Come True

     Dinosaurs are an engaging topic for many children and adults alike. I was definitely a dinosaur kid, and that is common for those of us who enjoy nature. Multiple Intelligences Theory would place us in the Naturalist Intelligence category. After all of the dinosaur discoveries, you'd think we'd run out of new fossils to find, but it hasn't happened yet. Recently a 5-year old dino lover's dreams came true when he found what might be a rare dinosaur bone with his dad.
     Young Wylie Rys was out fossil hunting with his dad, Tim, a zookeeper at the Dallas Zoo. Wylie brought his dad back a chunk of bone he found while they searched in a plot of disturbed land behind a shopping center in Mansfield, TX. It turns out that this chunk of bone may be part of a nodosaur, a rare find for this area. The nodosaur was a plated dinosaur about the size of a small horse. A team from Southern Methodist University is excavating these findings to learn more.

     Although many of us dream of finding a dinosaur, few of us have. Despite this, it is still fun to learn about them. The tricky bit for us grown-ups is keeping up with all the changes in dinosaur names and information as scientists learn more and re-classify the dino groupings. If you spend time with young children like I do, you've probably found you're being corrected when you try to talk about dinos using the names we learned, such as Brontosaurus- which now is referred to as an Apatosaurus. This is a great example of how much we are still learning about dinosaurs. As of a few days ago it turns out the Brontosaurus is back! Score one for adults everywhere!
     So how does one keep up with all of these changes? There are several major news outlets that reserve a web page just for dinosaur news, such as the NY Times and Discovery. Lots of research and news comes from the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum which is in the process of a major overhaul of their dino exhibit. Another great resource for keeping current with dinosaurs is the American Museum of Natural History. See the resource section below for some other interesting resources and great lesson plans.
     If you are looking for some picture books for introducing paleontology to children, I would recommend one of my childhood favorites that I continue to use in my classroom, "Digging Up Dinosaurs...and Putting them Back Together Again" by Aliki. The original book is out of print, however, it has been published under a shorter title: Digging Up Dinosaurs (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2).
Another good one is from the Magic School Bus series: The Magic School Bus in the Time of the Dinosaurs. I find picture books are always a great way to introduce topics and reinforce what students learn from their hands-on explorations.

Dreadnoughtus: A New Monstrous Dinosaur

Do you have a dinosaur-obsessed child? The announcement of the Dreadnoughtus dinosaur, one of the largest dinos discovered to date, is sure to knock the socks off of dinophiles young and old. This dinosaur would have weighed in at 65 tons. Kenneth Lacovara, PhD of Drexel University discovered Dreadnoughtus schrani and compares its weight to that of 12 African elephants or more than 7 T-rex! Dreadnoughtus schrani is a member of a group of dinosaurs called Titanosaurs. Titanosaurs had a wide range of sizes, the largest of which, up until now, have remained a mystery to us. Usually only a few fossils are found from each specimen. In the case of the Dreadnoughtus archeologists recovered 70% of the skeleton, making it almost complete. Dreadnoughtus schrani was a plant eating sauropod dinosaur. It was unearthed in Patagonia. The name Dreadnoughtus means "fears nothing", making it an excellent moniker for this house sized creature. It will be fascinating to see what else we learn about these massive creatures as discoveries like this continue.
